Special issue on Remote Sensing in Energy Resources

Energy resources are critical for human existence. Some we mine or abstract from the subsurface like gas, coal, oil, geothermal and uranium resources. Others we harness from the surface like wind, solar and tidal resources. Geoscientists and geological engineers play a critical role in the development of these resources, maintain their operation and evaluate their environmental impacts. In recent years, they have been using advancements in satellite and aerial remote sensing to address various aspects of energy resources. Remote sensing applications include identifying potential sources of fuels, detection of coal fire, surface exposure of oil, spouting of thermal water in hot springs, site characterisation to construct power plants, and identification and monitoring of geohazards associated with the energy sector. This special issue of Energy Geoscience welcomes papers that explore the application of remote sensing to energy resources, including reconnaissance and more detailed studies using techniques ranging from multispectral to hyperspectral, and radar to LiDAR.
