Holistic Approach to Sustainability of Existing and New Bridges

Nowadays bridge engineers face a new design paradigm: safe, economic, reliable, and sustainable. Sustainable development has been defined by the Brundtland Report (United Nations 1987) as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” According to that definition the three pillars of sustainability - environment, social, and economic - must be taken into account for engineering projects to achieve sustainability. As we know the mission of bridge engineering is to design and construct safe structures by making appropriate decisions. At the same time, society also has a strong demand for sustainability, to which bridge engineers can contribute through their decisions. Such decisions are necessary at every step of the design, construction, maintenance, and demolition process. For all those reasons, a holistic approach is necessary.

An International research group between Europe and China has been established to work on this topic. The First International Workshop was successfully held in Fuzhou on July 18th 2016 co-organized by Fuzhou University, Nanjing Tech University and Roma Tre University. The presentations covered many topics including green and new materials (timber, bamboo, UHPC), risk mitigation, nonlinear and advanced modelling, resilience of highways networks, structural optimization, durability and maintenance, repair and retrofitting of existing bridges. After the workshop, the organizers selected representative papers on the Holistic Approach to Sustainability to be published in the Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering (English Edition).

The accepted papers will be on ScienceDirect in September 2018.
