Functional Materials and Sustainable Technologies for Bio-Energy Harvestation (FMST)

Bioenergy systems are rapidly evolving as a sustainable platform with the potential of meeting the impending global challenges specific to energy security, climate change mitigation, and economic benefits. Efficient and innovative materials and associated energy conversion/storage/generation systems forms an important component of this domain. Research efforts are underway to establish stable materials and technologies for storing and converting energy from renewable sources, which must offer high conversion efficiency or power density, long operation lifetime and high stability. Appropriate, smart and affordable materials are therefore necessary for various device components like electrodes (anode/cathode), membranes, catalysts, electrolyte, etc.

This special issue aims to compile the recent scientific developments that could provide a realistic picture of the present scenario related to materials, their development and new technologies with applications in areas of bioenergy/biofuels specific to storage, conversion, and generation. The primary focus of this issue is to draw attention in terms of promising technologies that are widely explored namely, microbial fuel cells, bioelectrochemical systems, microbial electrochemical systems, microbial electrolysis, thermal and photocatalysis, etc. The fundamental issues and multidisciplinary approach encompassing the electrochemistry, materials science, biotechnology, energy engineering, etc., are essential to scale up the process with economic viability, socio-economic impact and technology development. Renewable feedstock catalysis to clean and economically attractive bio-based products also form part of the proposed special issue. Detailing the mechanism, operational configurations, governing factors and hybrid strategies along with LCA and techno-economic analysis will also be the focus.

The special issue invites original research articles, review articles and mini-reviews in this interdisciplinary domain under the following broad areas (but not limited to).

  • Applications related to bioenergy/biofuels - storage/conversion/generation- Microbial electrochemical Systems [Microbial fuel cell (MFC)/Bioelectrochemical Systems (BES)/MicrobialElectrolysis Cell (MEC)/Microbialdesalination/Electro-fermentation/ Biosensors], thermocatalytic, photocatalytic, etc.
