Computational Modeling of Composite Materials

Composite materials consist of at least two different constituents and aim to combine their strength finally leading to improved material properties such as better thermal conductivity, higher strength or ductility, enhanced impact resistance and higher energy adsorption, just to name a few. Composites are commonly classified by the type of reinforcements employed. Besides for instance laminated composites, the reinforcement is often embedded randomly in a matrix material. The characteristics and the behaviour of the composite is often governed by a complex interaction between the reinforcement and the matrix. Understanding the physics of composites to finally improve their properties requires computational methods which can give insight that experiments cannot provide, especially at the interface of the material. Different approaches for different length scales and applications have therefore been developed, from nanoscale simulations based on molecular dynamics up to relatively simple analytical approaches for large scale structures. The goal of the SI is on computational modelling of composites. Manuscripts dealing with the following topics are particularly welcome:

  • New computational models for composites
  • Machine learning approaches to model composites
  • New constitutive models
  • Homogenization approaches
  • Uncertainty quantification
  • Analytical methods to predict the behaviour of composites
  • Multiscale modelling of composites
  • Predicting material properties of composites
  • Materials design



Best Paper published in this special issue will be awarded with certificate and this award will be based on the originality of the research and its special contribution to Defence Technology.
