3rd Sino-German Symposium on Fundamentals of Advanced Nuclear Safety Technology

Published 30 March, 2020

Nuclear safety is attracting enormous attention and has become a pressing issue for international collaboration, particularly since the Fukushima accident in Japan. The special situations in China and Germany motivate scientists and engineers from both countries to enhance their interaction. Worldwide, China has the largest nuclear power development programme, requires high safety standards and looks for international collaboration, while Germany is one of the countries with the most advanced nuclear safety technologies and is looking for international markets.

The 3rd Sino-German Symposium on Fundamentals of Advanced Nuclear Safety Technology (SG-FANS) was hosted by the Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) on 25-27 September 2019 in Xi’an, China. This meeting provided the opportunity to enhance interaction between scientists in both countries, with some prominent, international invited experts.

To build on the outcome of the conference, and to capture a range of experiences in advanced nuclear safety technology, JANDT plans to publish a special issue on the 3rd Sino-German Symposium.

The main purposes of the special issue are to (1) establish and maintain the platform for scientific information exchange and to enhance the connection between researchers and scientists in both countries; (2) identify the topics of common interests; and (3) clarify the possibilities of future collaborations.

The SG-FANS-3 special issue contains, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Advanced safety components for innovative nuclear systems, incl. fusion reactors
  • New passive safety systems and natural circulation
  • Safety-related phenomena such as CHF and post-CHF
  • Severe accidents-related phenomena such as core degradation, IVR, core catcher, steam explosion, hydrogen safety and containment thermal-hydraulics
  • Advanced measurement techniques, experimental infrastructure and data base
  • Codes development and validation
  • Application of CFD methodology
  • Nuclear education and training
