Special issue on fundamental research and policy on carbon neutrality

In response to global climate change and the Paris Agreement that defines climate warming targets of 1.5-2.0 °C temperature increase by the end of century, over 100 countries have proposed commitments on the reduction of individual carbon neutrality-related emission. However, the complexities of the land-ocean-atmosphere-human dimension coupled system introduce large uncertainties into projections of global and regional carbon fluxes under different emission-cut scenarios, which is of fundamental importance to develop strategic pathways before and after achievement of net-zero CO2 emissions (i.e., carbon neutrality).

This special issue will strive to identify and answer questions around how we can optimize strategic pathways toward carbon neutrality or net zero carbon emission goals. We will seek to improve our understanding of land-ocean-atmosphere carbon cycles and their future trends, particularly in the context of both positive and negative emissions. Discussion on feasible technologies of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Sequestrations (CCUS) are equally welcome. We will also consider how large economies such as China, the US, the EU, Japan, the UK and South Korea can respond at both national and/or global levels by formulating science-based policies.

Topics covered:

  • Carbon-climate interactions
  • Global and regional carbon cycles in terrestrial and marine systems
  • Ocean- and land-based Carbon Dioxide Removal
  • Carbon storage, utilization and sequestrations
  • Carbon management and climate policies towards carbon neutrality

Deadline for manuscript submissions:

  • 31 December 2021

Submission instructions:
