Special issue on grassland science in a new era: major issues and challenges

Published 09 October, 2021

Grasslands are one of the major ecosystems of the world, covering approximately 25% of the terrestrial planet. Grasslands play an important role in people's livelihoods for producing meat and dairy products, providing habitats for biodiversity, and delivering essential ecosystem services such as climate regulation and cultural heritage. Grassland science provides the scientific basis for the management, improvement, utilisation, monitoring and conservation of rangelands and cultivated pastures. One particular challenge is to resolve the conflict between the rapid increase in demand for grassland-enabled animal products and grassland degradations caused by climate change and human interventions. Grassland science seeks to identify measures to tackle these challenges via integrated and interdisciplinary approaches.

This special issue calls for critical reviews, perspectives and research articles that contribute solutions to sustainable grassland developments and advance the state of knowledge in grassland science. We are particularly interested in, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Molecular and traditional breeding of forage, turf and bioenergy plants
  • Novel management strategies and tools for cultivated pastures and turfgrasses
  • Grassland conservation and smart grazing
  • Grassland structure, functions and dynamics under global climate changes
  • Remote sensing and big-data analytics for grassland resource mapping, monitoring and management

Deadline for manuscript submissions:

  • 1 March 2022

Submission instructions

Please read the Guide for Authors before submitting. All articles should be submitted online; please select Grassland science as the article type on submission. All submissions will be subject to peer review.
