SMAT Talks –There is plenty of room beyond molecules

Molecular science has been developed to disclose material structures and properties at the molecular level. However, aggregates, which serve as a particularly useful form of materials, sometimes behave differently from individual molecules and show annihilated or new properties. Known unique properties including aggregation-induced emission (AIE), crystallisation-induced emission (CIE), room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF), aggregation-induced anti-Kasha transition (AKT), clusterisation-triggered emission (CTE), through-space interaction (TSI), mechanoluminescence (ML), aggregation-induced circularly polarised luminescence (CPL), aggregation-induced generation of reactive oxygen species (AIG-ROS), photothermal/photoacoustic (PT/PA), and solid-state molecular motion (SSMM) are only identified in aggregates, indicating their exotic features. Aggregate science is increasingly filling the gaps between molecules and aggregates and is expected to contribute to new materials and technological development. It has the potential to become an interdisciplinary research subject and serve as a general platform for academic research.


Professor Ben Zhong Tang

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

Ben Zhong Tang is Distinguished Presidential Chair Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-SZ). His research interests include macromolecular chemistry, materials science, and biomedical theranostics.  He is spearheading the research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE), a topic ranked no. 2 in the areas of Chemistry and Materials Science by Thomson Reuters in its report on Research Fronts 2015.

Tang received his BS and PhD degrees from South China University of Technology and Kyoto University, Japan, respectively.  He conducted postdoctoral research at University of Toronto in Canada.  He joined HKUST as an Assistant Professor in 1994 and was promoted to Chair Professor in 2008. Now he is an Adjunct Professor at HKUST. He has been elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials (APAM), the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS), and the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE).

Tang has published more than 1,700 papers.  His publications have been cited over 136,000 times, with an h-index of 166 (Google Scholar data on 23/04/2022). He has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher in both Chemistry and Materials Science by the Web of Science Group since 2014. He has received the National Natural Science Award (1st Class; 2017) from the Chinese Government, the Scientific and Technological Progress Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (2017), the National Natural Science Award from the Chinese Government (2007), and the Senior Research Fellowship from the Croucher Foundation (2007), etc. He is now serving as Editor-in-Chief of Aggregate (Wiley).
