Opportunities and Challenges in Archaeomaterials Science

Published 22 May, 2025

Introduction:

For the past three years, workshops and colloquia at the Archaeological Institute of America have been exploring Opportunities and Challenges in Archaeomaterials Science. Experts in the research fields, methodologies, and techniques of metallurgical analysis, portable Raman spectroscopy, XRF, archaeogenetics, dating, zooarchaeology, and proteomics have presented their results in these sessions. This special issue of Advances in Archaeomaterials includes the most impactful proceedings. The future of these fields is investigated in depth, addressing questions such as: What opportunities are on the horizon to answer ever more important archaeological questions through analysis of archaeological materials? What challenges, technological or otherwise, stand in the way of realizing these visions?
