#AI reads Urine#The Impact of Visceral Fat Accumulation on 24-h Urine Chemistries and Stone-Recurrence in Patients With Urolithiasis
Published 04 September, 2025
This study investigates the impact of visceral fat accumulation on 24-hour urine chemistries and stone recurrence in patients with urolithiasis. Through a retrospective analysis of data from 194 patients (Cohort 1) and 164 patients (Cohort 2, excluding those with insufficient follow-up) with upper urinary tract stones, it is found that larger visceral fat area and higher visceral fat area ratio are independent factors associated with a past history of stones. Patients with a visceral fat area of 100 cm² or more have significantly higher urine volume and higher excretion of creatinine, uric acid, sodium, phosphate, oxalate, and other substances. During a median follow-up period of 42 months, only visceral fat area is significantly associated with stone recurrence. The conclusion is that a larger visceral fat area leads to abnormal urine chemistries, which in turn increases the risk of stone recurrence.
