In Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Professor Gu Fangzhou’s Birth (2026)

The Chinese Medical Sciences Journal invites submissions for a Special Column celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Gu Fangzhou (1926–2016), a preeminent virologist renowned as the "Father of Polio Vaccines in China," former President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), and the Founding Editor-in-Chief of this Journal. 2026 also marks the Journal's 40th anniversary, making this a particularly fitting occasion to honor Professor Gu's monumental contributions to medical science and public health, to celebrate his spirit of dedication to nation and people, and to carry forward his legacy of scientific excellence.

We welcome submissions from researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals worldwide on topics related to Professor Gu's life, work, and enduring influence, as well as the broader fields he helped to shape.

Suggested Topics (include but are not limited to):

• Professor Gu Fangzhou's academic legacy, scientific thought, and research ethos.
• Personal recollections and commentaries on Professor Gu's work and innovations.
• The contemporary relevance of Professor Gu's philosophies on discipline development and talent cultivation.
• Insights from the development of China's infectious disease prevention and control systems.
• The history of polio eradication, current global epidemiology, and control strategies.
• The evolution and future of virology research, particularly within CAMS.
• Advances and prospects in vaccine research, development, and regulation.
• Polio immunization programs and technological innovations.

Article Types:

• Reviews: abstract and keywords required. ~5,000 words, 2–3 figures, 40–50 references.
• Commentaries: no abstract required. ~2,000 words, minimum 8 references.
• Memorial Essays: no abstract required. ~1,500 words, figures encouraged, minimum 3 references.

Manuscript Requirements:

• Submissions must be original, unpublished work.
• Content should be academically novel, with clear viewpoints, robust argumentation, and appropriate citations.
• Manuscripts should reflect current developments and topics of broad interest to the global medical community.
• Academic rigor, a global perspective, reliable data, and clear language are essential. Images must be free of intellectual property disputes.

Submission Guidelines:

• Language: manuscripts should be submitted in English. Submissions in Chinese are also acceptable; upon acceptance, the editorial office will arrange for professional translation into English.
• Submission: please submit via the Journal's online submission system. During submission, please indicate that your manuscript is intended for the "Special Column: Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Professor Gu Fangzhou."
• Deadline:  August 31, 2026.

Peer Review & Publication:

All submissions will undergo a rapid, double-blind peer review. Accepted articles will be published online-first in regular 2026 issues of the Chinese Medical Sciences Journal, receive dedicated promotion, and be compiled into a special print volume. There are no Article Processing Charges (APCs) for this Special Column.
