Special Issue on [SCALP MICROECOLOGY AND BARRIER FUNCTION: A NEW FRONTIER IN SYSTEMIC SCALP HEALTH]
Published 24 February, 2026
Introduction:
The scalp represents a highly specialised skin environment characterised by dense pilosebaceous units, abundant vascularisation and rich neural innervation. Beyond its traditional consideration in cosmetic and dermatological contexts, the scalp is increasingly recognised as a biological interface linking local cutaneous processes with broader physiological regulation. Its microecology and barrier function are important in homeostasis, g immune responses and inflammatory and neuroendocrine signalling that impact systemic scalp health, defined as the integrated state of scalp structure, function and resilience and its interactions with whole-body physiological processes.
This special issue presents emerging insights into the composition and function of the scalp microecology and the mechanisms governing barrier integrity. It highlights how disturbances in these systems contribute to common scalp disorders as well as their broader implications for systemic scalp health. By integrating perspectives from microbiology, skin biology, scalp care technologies and clinical research, the collection provides a holistic view of fundamental mechanisms and key approaches for improving systemic scalp health.
Topics covered:
