Journal of International Ceramic Studies is published by the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Institute and the Tsientang Institute for Advanced Study, with the academic support of the Society of International Ceramic Studies. It is a peer-reviewed international journal dedicated to advancing global research on historical ceramics, with a primary focus on stoneware and porcelain.
This semiannual journal investigates the complete life-cycle of high-fired ceramics and their associated industries - from production organization and technological processes in private and official kilns, through short-distance or worldwide distribution as trade goods, diplomatic gifts, personal possessions, or functional containers, to diverse utilization patterns and ultimate archaeological contexts (including intentional/accidental deposition and refuse assemblages), or their continued significance as heirloom artifacts.
The journal seeks to explore socioeconomic interactions among historical producers, merchants, and users, while providing insights into present-day cultural dynamics and collaborations within and between societies.
We welcome disciplinary and interdisciplinary research on historical ceramics, including but not limited to:
Anthropology
Archaeology
Archaeometry
Art history
Economic history
Global history
Museology
Studies employing integrated multidisciplinary methodologies are strongly encouraged. While focusing on humanities-based approaches to high-fired ceramics, we will consider exceptionally innovative archaeometry studies or earthenware research that significantly advances historical understanding.
