Special issue on digital transportation infrastructures

Published 08 July, 2021

Over the past decades, transportation infrastructures have boosted social and economic development and their importance is expected to continue. However, emerging and fast-growing technologies, such as connected and autonomous vehicles, ‘Digital Twin Cities’ and ‘Smart Cities’, pose a variety of challenges to their performance. Interest in the ability of digital transportation infrastructures (DTIs) to help address these challenges, is rising exponentially in both academia and industry.

Despite the great potential of DTIs, knowledge gaps and questions remain. For example, how can we optimize the deployment of smart sensors? How can we extract the key parameters of DTIs from advanced survey technologies? How can we automatically create a precise digital twin of transportation infrastructures? What changes will DTIs bring to the operation, management and maintenance of infrastructures? How can we prepare DTIs for step-changes in future modes of transportation?

For this special issue, we are interested in papers that address these questions and other DTI-related issues.

Topics covered:

They include, but are not limited to:

  • Advanced infrastructure data collection and processing techniques
  • Big data analytics in DTIs
  • Automatic inventory of transportation infrastructure assets
  • “Scan to BIM” modelling
  • Infrastructure management using multi-source data
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in DTIs
  • Requirements of transportation infrastructures for autonomous driving

Important deadlines:

  • Submission deadline: 31 March 2022
