Shanghai Key Laboratory of Plant Functional Genomics and Resources
The Shanghai Key Laboratory of Plant Functional Genomics and Resources was approved for establishment on September 30, 2014, and successfully passed inspection in December 2016. Based at Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, the laboratory was co-founded in collaboration with Shanghai Normal University and Fudan University. Focusing on national development strategies and local needs, the laboratory is guided by green industry principles and ecological civilization construction. Utilizing the rich plant resources of the botanical garden, it conducts research in functional genomics to explore functional genes and innovate germplasm in resource plants. This initiative aims to transcend the traditional responsibilities of the botanical garden, to carry forward scientific research, and to establish a high-standard research platform. Currently, the laboratory comprises over 80 research and support staff within 16 teams, focusing on significant resource plants such as Paeoniaceae, Lamiaceae, Convolvulaceae, ferns, and Orchidaceae. The laboratory has achieved remarkable research results and is the only one approved by the Shanghai Science and Technology Committee to specialize in the functional genomics of resource plants. The laboratory is recognized by the Shanghai Science and Technology Committee for its focus on the functional genomics of resource plants, highlighting its unique role in advancing this scientific field.
Key Laboratory of East China Plant Conservation and Utilization,National Forestry and Grassland Administration
The “Key Laboratory of East China Plant Conservation and Utilization” of Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden was officially approved for establishment in January 2026 by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. Guided by the development principle of “strengthening fundamentals, advancing frontiers, tackling critical challenges, and striving for excellence,” the laboratory is committed to building an integrated research platform that encompasses intelligent species survey and identification, assessment of survival potential and analysis of population maintenance mechanisms, introduction and domestication of wild resource plants, propagation and reintroduction of endangered wild species, and the sustainable utilization of plant resources. The laboratory will systematically promote the coordinated development of in situ and ex situ conservation, comprehensively enhance the capacity for conserving rare and endangered plants in East China, and elevate the innovative utilization of plant resources. Through these efforts, the Laboratory seeks to contribute a “Shanghai Model” to China’s ecological security, industrial upgrading, and global biodiversity governance.
