Marine Corrosion and Biofouling Protection
Published 29 August, 2025
Introduction:
Marine corrosion and biofouling prevention play a critical role in ensuring the steady development of the marine economy. These phenomena directly impact the safe operation of marine facilities and the efficient utilization of marine resources, while also being crucial for the protection of the marine environment. Marine corrosion can lead to rapid material degradation, not only increasing maintenance costs but also potentially causing severe accidents that threaten personnel safety and result in environmental pollution. Biofouling increases the roughness and weight of ship hulls, thereby increasing navigation resistance, leading to higher fuel consumption, and resulting in economic losses. It may also facilitate the invasion of alien species, disrupting ecological balance. Therefore, conducting in-depth research into the mechanisms of marine corrosion and biofouling and developing advanced protective technologies holds profound significance for enhancing the durability of marine engineering facilities, ensuring operational safety, and protecting the marine environment.
To elevate the research standards in marine corrosion and biofouling studies, drive industry development, and leverage the journal’s role as an exchange platform, this issue has specially curated a special edition on “Marine Corrosion and Biofouling Protection,” aiming to report research findings in fundamental theories, cutting-edge technologies, big data applications, key technologies, and performance evaluations. This special issue has specially invited Professor Wei Shicheng from the Army Specialized University of the People's Liberation Army (formerly the Army Armor Academy), Professor Zhang Yuxin from Chongqing University, and Researcher Zhang Ruiyong from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to serve as guest editors. We are now soliciting submissions from experts and teams engaged in related research. Accepted articles will not incur any APC fees, and the special issue is scheduled for regular publication in the first half of 2026.
