Prof. RAAJ Ramsankaran is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Bombay. He received his B.E. in Civil Engineering from Coimbatore Institute of Technology, followed by an M.E. in Geoinformatics from the Institute of Remote Sensing, College of Engineering Guindy, Anna University, and a PhD from IIT Roorkee. He began his academic career as a Lecturer at BITS Pilani in 2010 and joined IIT Bombay in 2012.Currently, Prof. Ramsankaran leads the Hydro-Remote Sensing Applications (H-RSA) Group, which advances satellite, aerial, and GNSS-based remote sensing techniques for studying the water cycle, including the cryosphere. His research integrates hydrologic, hydrodynamic, and glacier-dynamic modelling with ground, UAV and satellite observations to improve understanding of freshwater availability, movement, and variability. His overarching goal is to develop scientific tools and insights that strengthen water-resource management and natural-hazard preparedness. In recognition of his impactful contributions, he has received honours including the Indian National Geospatial Award (2025) by Indian Society of Remote Sensing; National Geospatial Faculty Fellow Award (2024) from FOSSEE-GIS, IIT Bombay and the Prof. R. J. Garde Award (2020) from the Indian Society of Hydraulics.
