Special Issue on Asian Perspectives on Energy Systems Transitions

This issue aims to bring together research examining energy and power system transitions across Asia using integrated assessment model (IAM) and other modelling frameworks. As the world’s most economically dynamic region, Asia faces the dual challenge of sustaining economic growth while meeting ambitious net-zero targets. Its energy transition must therefore be not only technologically feasible but also grounded in the region’s socio-economically realities. 

This special issue will feature applied modeling studies that capture these complexities to strengthen the regional evidence base, while addressing a major research gap in the IPCC 6th Assessment Report.

Objectives include:

• Presenting recent advances in integrated assessment modeling within the region, with a focus on applications relevant to climate and energy policy
• Exploring research that demonstrates the integration of behavioral parameters, sub-regional modeling, and cross-sectoral dependencies (such as biodiversity and CCS) into net-zero frameworks
• Discussing challenges related to technological change, policy design, and sectoral detail, particularly concerning the industrial and household sectors.
