Special Issue on Connected and Automated Transportation Systems for Safe, Sustainable, and Resilient Mobility
Published 20 October, 2026
Connected and automated transportation systems have the potential to enable safer, more efficient, sustainable, and resilient mobility by integrating vehicle automation, connectivity, infrastructure support, and coordinated traffic operations. Nevertheless, realising these benefits requires advances in robust perception and decision-making under uncertainty, vehicle coordination in mixed traffic, V2X communication, resilient control, human–machine interaction, and infrastructure support. Further progress is also needed in energy-efficient operation, digital-twin and simulation-based validation, traffic safety, and equitable automated mobility services.
This Special Issue invites theoretical, methodological, computational, and experimental research addressing these challenges across vehicle, traffic, and system levels, with the aim of advancing coordinated, reliable, and sustainable connected and automated transportation.
Topics included, but not limited to:
- Eco-driving and platooning for energy-efficient mobility
- Resilient traffic control under disruptions and hazards
- Robust perception and decision-making under uncertain or partial information
- Multi-agent control and coordination in mixed-autonomy traffic
- Cooperative perception and V2X-enabled transportation systems
- Digital twins and simulation-to-real-world validation
- Infrastructure support for sensing, communication, and computation
- Human–machine interaction in mixed traffic
- Traffic safety in mixed-autonomy environments
- Equity and accessibility in automated mobility services
