Special Issue on Advances in GEOAI For Earth Surface Processes and Environmental Change

Published 27 September, 2026

Introduction:

Recent advances in Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), which combines machine learning, deep learning, spatial statistics, and geocomputation, have profoundly altered the investigation and forecasting of earth surface processes and environmental change. Unprecedented opportunities for modeling intricate surface-subsurface interactions, geomorphic dynamics, hydrological processes, and climate-driven environmental transformations have been made possible by the expanding availability of high-resolution remote sensing data, UAV observations, LiDAR, IoT sensors, and large geospatial databases. The dynamic interactions between the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere are governed by earth surface processes, which shape landscapes and control the movement, transformation, and distribution of environmental systems. Recent advances have enabled unparalleled spatial and temporal precision in the observation, measurement, and analysis of Earth surface processes. These technology breakthroughs enable new methods of monitoring environmental change, assessing anthropogenic and natural impacts, understanding complex Earth-environment interactions, and developing predictive strategies for resilient and sustainable environmental management. This Special Issue is bringing together cutting-edge research in GeoAI, machine learning, remote sensing, and data-driven modeling to address Earth and environmental concerns as climatic and anthropogenic pressures. It focuses on novel computational approaches to understanding geological, geographical, and biogeochemical processes, analyzing environmental risks and pollution pathways, and assessing ecosystem vulnerability in terrestrial, aquatic, and coastal environments.
