Special Issue on Exploring the Opportunities of Leveraging Agentic AI in Human-Computer Co-Creation

Published 19 January, 2026

Introduction:

The integration of agentic artificial intelligence (agentAI) into design workflows marks a definitive paradigm shift from computer-aided design to agents-based co-creation. We are transitioning from tools that passively execute instructions to intelligent agents capable of semantic reasoning, generative synthesis and proactive problem-solving. This evolution necessitates a re-evaluation of the hybrid systems formed by human designers and autonomous agents.

This special issue presents the state of science and art in the field of agentAI within human-computer co-creation workflows. It defines the boundaries of opportunity by addressing the critical cognitive dynamics of hybrid intelligence and agentified environments. Specifically, we examine the transition from reactive tools to proactive partners where AI independently plans, critiques and iterates. This shift redefines the distribution of labour, moving the designer's role from manual operator to creative director, leveraging agents to unlock complex solution spaces and multiply human creative potential.

We invite cross-disciplinary contributions based on design science, methodology and practice. We particularly welcome empirical studies and theoretical frameworks that treat AI not merely as a utility, but as a proactive participant in the creative ecosystem.

Topics covered:

  • From intellectualised to self-intelligentising software agents
  • Cognitive dynamics in hybrid intelligence systems
  • Ampliative methodologies for human-computer co-creation
  • From prompting to directive planning
  • Trust, oversight and negotiation
  • Agentic architectures for design synthesis
  • Ethics, alignment and agent autonomy

Submission Instructions:

Please read Guide for Authors before submitting the full manuscript.

This special issue follows a two-stage submission process. Authors first submit a title and abstract of their planned manuscript for initial screening. All articles should be submitted online, please select SI: Agentic AI (abstract) on submission. Following the rigorous review and acceptance of these abstracts, authors are then invited to submit their full manuscripts for further evaluation. All articles should be submitted online, please select [SI: Agentic AI] to submit the full article after the abstract is accepted.

Important Deadlines:

  • Abstract submission deadline: 1 March 2026
  • Submission deadline: 1 May 2026
