Special Issue on Emerging Pollutants in the Environment and Their Sustainable Remediation

Published 06 December, 2023

Introduction:

Emerging pollutants (EPs) pose a rising threat to the world's population. These toxic substances are finding their way into soil, air, and water due to poor waste management and disposal practices, as well as the rapid expansion of industrial applications coupled with urban population growth. One example of such a pollutant is 1,4-dioxane, considered a high-priority chemical classified as a human carcinogen.

Along with the deteriorating quality and the availability of water and soil, these emerging pollutants have the potential to enter the food chain. Various methods are being used for the treatment and removal of EPs including biological, physico-chemical, and oxidation methods. Notably, advanced technologies play a major role in the remediation of these harmful contaminants in the environment.

This special issue focuses on both the current developments and prospects of emerging pollutants in the aspect of the environment and their sustainable remediation.

Topics covered:

We welcome submissions of original research papers and reviews from all disciplines investigating relevant topics, including but not limited to

  • Impact of persistent and widespread pollutants on the environment
  • Ecotoxicity of emerging environmental pollutants on human health
  • Investigations and case studies on environmental contaminants and human health
  • Effect of environmental emerging pollutants such as dioxane, per-fluoroalkyl and poly-fluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances, and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) in drinking water and their treatment
  • Understanding of the consequences of emerging pollutants on the environment
  • Mechanistic investigations related to pollution exposure and effect
  • Novel technologies, biosensors, and monitoring devices for the detection of environmental contaminants
  • Regular monitoring of emerging pollutants in the environments
  • Advanced greener and circular technologies in waste management
  • Environmental Cleaning up through zero-waste approaches
  • Waste management through reduced recycling and reuse approaches
  • Suitable management of emerging environmental pollutants
