Special Issue on Aquatic ecological processes and management

Published 29 June, 2026

Introduction:

This special issue focuses on the interactions between hydrological dynamics, water quality, and aquatic ecological processes across freshwater, estuarine, and coastal ecosystems. It aims to improve understanding of how flow regimes, nutrient transport, sediment dynamics, and pollutant inputs influence biogeochemical cycling, food web structure, biodiversity patterns and ecosystem functioning. By encouraging multi-scale studies from organismal responses to ecosystem-level processes in the changing water environment, the issue links fundamental ecological research with sustainable management and restoration practices. This collection will provide a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working to address pressing water-related environmental challenges.

Topics Covered:

  • Hydrological dynamics in aquatic ecosystems
  • Water quality and biogeochemical cycling
  • Nutrient transport and transformation processes
  • Sediment dynamics and habitat structure
  • Pollutant fate and ecological impacts
  • Aquatic food web interactions and energy flow
  • Biodiversity patterns in freshwater estuarine and coastal systems
  • Ecosystem functioning under environmental change
  • Multi scale ecological responses to hydrological variability
  • Restoration strategies for degraded aquatic environments
