Prof Jun Xia is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Chair Professor and Director of the Research Institute for Water Security (RIWS) at Wuhan University. He has also been a Foreign Member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters since 2023.
Prof Xia has conducted extensive research on hydrology and water‑resources management for nearly four decades in China and internationally. His distinguished career has been recognised through numerous honours, including the International Hydrological Prize‑Volker Medal, jointly awarded by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization in 2014; China's State Natural Science Award in 2017; International Water Resources Association's Ven Te Chow Memorial Award and Lecture in 2023. He was also elected a Fellow of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) in 2019 and a Fellow of the International Science Council (ISC) in 2023.
In addition to his research achievements, Prof Xia has held several prominent international leadership positions. These include President of the International Water Resources Association (2009–2012), Governor of the World Water Council (2009–2015), Co-Chair of the InterAcademy Council Water Programme (2004–2010), Bureau Member of the IUGG (2019–2023), and Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme’s Ecohydrology Programme (2012–present).
