Senior Scientist in the Emergencies Science and Technology Section (ESTS) at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)
Dr. Yang earned his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry and environmental processes from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2000; his master’s degree in organic and analytical chemistry from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 1997; and his bachelor’s degree in organic chemistry from Beijing Normal University, China, in 1992.
Dr. Yang has devoted more than 30 years to research in environmental science and analytical chemistry. Early in his career, he conducted research on the analysis of organic pollutants and their environmental behavior at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He later pursued research on wastewater pollution treatment and its applications at Nanyang Technological University.
In 2002, Dr. Yang joined the Emergency Science and Technology Research Laboratory at Environment Canada, where he began his work in environmental forensics, focusing on the analysis and evidence collection of environmental releases—particularly the chemical fingerprinting and environmental behavior of petroleum products. Since joining ECCC, his research has expanded to include environmental forensics of potential spill candidates and emergency non-targeted analysis of hazardous and noxious substances (HNS). He has authored approximately 180 academic publications, including nearly 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and 11 invited book chapters.
