Dr. Floris Goerlandt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Dalhousie University and holds the Canada Research Chair in Risk Management and Resource Optimization for Marine Industries. His research focuses on systems-based risk analysis and decision support for operations in challenging marine environments, with a particular emphasis on Arctic and other polar waterways.
His work advances methodologies in waterway risk management, area-based assessment of shipping activities, emergency management, and Search and Rescue system performance in cold-region and ice-affected contexts. He integrates quantitative risk modeling, data science, optimization, and uncertainty analysis with qualitative approaches such as interviews, focus groups, and field observations to examine the technical, environmental, and organizational dimensions of risk in polar and polar-like settings.
Dr. Goerlandt has received the Dalhousie University President’s Research Excellence Awards for Emerging Investigators (2020) and Research Impact (2024) and has been recognized with best paper awards from the Canadian Transportation Research Forum and the Multimodal Transportation journal. He has authored or co-authored approximately 100 journal articles, 50 conference papers and book chapters, and co-edited two books. He contributes to national and international professional bodies, including serving on the board of the Canadian Maritime Shipping Risk Forum and as an expert member of the Risk Management Working Group of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities. He is member of the Editorial Board of several journals, including Risk Analysis, Safety Science, and Transportation Safety and Environment.
