Published 06 February, 2026

We are thrilled to announce an important addition to the leadership of Mitochondrial Communications. Effective January 1, 2026, Dr. Paolo Bernardi has joined the journal as Co-Editor-in-Chief.

Dr. Bernardi is internationally recognized for his contributions to mitochondrial biology and disease. He is best known for his seminal, field-defining work on the discovery and characterization of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), a mechanism underlying cell death, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and neurodegenerative diseases. His research has also advanced understanding of molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial calcium homeostasis, the protective role of mitochondria in cardiac health, and the bioenergetic foundations of human disease.

We are confident that Dr. Bernardi's expertise and editorial leadership will strengthen the journal’s scientific standards and support our mission to publish rigorous, field-relevant research in mitochondrial science.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Paolo Bernardi. We look forward to an exciting new chapter under his guidance.

Welcome, Dr. Bernardi!
