Special issue on biomaterials in dental translational medicine
Published 23 May, 2025
Introduction:
Biomaterials are engineered materials designed to interact with biological systems for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes. In dentistry, they play a pivotal role in restorative treatments, tissue regeneration, and infection control. Dental biomaterials not only provide structural support but also actively engage in biological processes such as osseointegration, antimicrobial action, and bioactive signaling.
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence are revolutionizing the design of biomaterials and the personalization of treatments, while innovative drug delivery systems are enhancing targeted therapies for oral diseases. Regenerative oral medicine is leveraging biomaterial scaffolds and stem cells to restore damaged tissues, and the advent of 3D printing and digitalization is enabling precise, patient-specific solutions.
Nonetheless, dysfunctional biomaterial integration can lead to clinical failures, underscoring a critical need for rigorous research and innovation. This special issue is features the latest developments of biomaterials in dental translational medicine. We warmly welcome original research articles that contribute to advancing this important field.
