Call for Applications: Early Career Editorial Board Members — Emerging Contaminants (EMCON)

Emerging Contaminants is a leading peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to publishing research on emerging contaminants. To further enhance the journal's international visibility, foster global academic exchange among early-career researchers, and strengthen the editorial team, we invite applications for 15 Early Career Editorial Board (ECEB) Members. Recruitment will be conducted through a combination of editorial board nominations and open applications. All appointments follow a fixed two-year term and a standardized quantitative performance evaluation system.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Uphold high academic integrity with no record of research misconduct. Candidates' research must align with the journal's scope. Candidates must demonstrate enthusiasm for academic publishing and show a clear willingness to contribute to the journal's long-term development.
- Hold a doctoral degree awarded within the past 10 years.
- Demonstrate strong academic judgment and peer review competence, and the capacity for special issue management.
- Have published at least three high-quality papers as first or corresponding author in reputable international journals focused on emerging contaminants within the past five years. Preference may apply to applicants with experience leading externally funded research programs.
- Maintain active global academic engagement. Priority will be extended to scholars whose research focus matches the journal's global development strategy.
Responsibilities
ECEB membership follows a dynamic performance-based tenure system. All members are required to submit a concise work report upon term completion, which will be evaluated annually by the Editorial Board; outstanding members are eligible for reappointment or promotion full Editorial Board membership. All ECEB members shall fulfill their editorial duties diligently in accordance with the journal's development needs. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Manuscript Solicitation & Recommendation
Actively recommend high-quality submissions and expand the journal's pool of high-level manuscripts. During the term, members are encouraged to publish a high-quality original article as first or corresponding author, or invite distinguished global researchers to contribute to the journal.
2. Special Issue Management
Initiate and lead forward-looking and policy-relevant special issues, and participate in the full lifecycle of special issue development, including topic design, call-for-papers organization, manuscript solicitation, and peer review arrangement.
3. Peer Review
Complete no fewer than five peer reviews per year, delivering objective, rigorous, and timely evaluation comments to improve manuscript processing efficiency.
4. Journal Promotion
Promote EMCON through major academic conferences, research collaborations, and academic social media platforms. Proactively share official journal updates, special issue calls, and key academic content to enhance the journal's global academic visibility.
5. Journal Development
Track international disciplinary frontiers and provide constructive strategic advice on the journal's thematic planning, column construction, and long-term academic development.
6. Meetings & Collaborative Tasks
Actively attend early-career editorial board meetings and academic seminars, and cooperate with the editorial office to complete routine journal-related work.

- Receive priority consideration for promotion to full Editorial Board Member. The journal hosts annual evaluations for the Outstanding Early Career Editorial Board Member award, with exceptional members prioritized for reappointment and promotion.
Performance Review and Termination
Members who fail to fulfill core editorial duties, deliver insufficient academic contributions, or decline review assignments without valid justification will not be reappointed upon term completion. Any member found with research misconduct, ethical violations, or serious conflicts of interest will be terminated immediately.

- Application channels: Open applications, editorial board nominations, and targeted invitations.
- Required Materials: A full academic CV and a list of up to 10 representative publications.
- Preliminary review: Eligibility is assessed by the editorial office.
- Final selection: Made by anonymous vote by the full Editorial Board, based on merit and suitability.
- Appointment: Formal certification is issued after public announcement with no objections.
