Special Issue on Advances and Emerging Challenges in Mine Ventilation and Underground Environmental Control

Published 03 February, 2026

Introduction

Mine ventilation is a cornerstone of safe, sustainable, and productive underground mining operations. Rapid advancements in deep mining methods, automation, diesel-to-electric transitions, and regulatory expectations are introducing both new challenges and opportunities for improved ventilation design, monitoring, and management. At the same time, recent developments in numerical modeling, sensor technology, data analytics, and ventilation-on-demand (VoD) systems are reshaping best practices across the global mining industry.

Despite these advances, there remains a need for a consolidated platform that brings together cutting-edge research, practical case studies, and forward-looking perspectives on mine ventilation and underground environmental control. This special issue aims to address this gap by showcasing high-quality contributions that reflect both academic innovation and industry application. We welcome original research articles, review papers, and selected case studies on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced mine ventilation system design and optimization
  • Ventilation-on-demand (VoD) and smart ventilation systems
  • Mine heat stress management and thermal environment modeling
  • Diesel emissions, electrification, and air quality control
  • Fire, explosion, and emergency ventilation strategies
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and network modeling applications
  • Monitoring, sensors, digital twins, and data-driven ventilation management
  • Energy efficiency, decarbonization, and sustainability in mine ventilation
  • Ventilation challenges in non-traditional underground operations

To submit your paper, please follow the submission guidelines and indicate that your submission is intended for the special issue on "Mine Ventilation". We look forward to receiving your contributions and fostering the dialogue on this critical topic.

Once your manuscript is accepted, it will proceed to production and be published simultaneously both in the current regular issue and as part of the online Special Issue. While the articles may appear across different regular issues, they will be clearly marked and grouped under the Special Issue theme.
