2025 International Landscape Architecture Symposium (ILAS) - Sustainability·Inclusivity·Evidence-Based Science: Towards Resilient Futures
(First Round)
Introduction
Sustainability is the central theme of global development in the 21st century. Its origins can be traced back to the World Conservation Strategy, jointly published in 1980 by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). At its core, sustainability aims to achieve a dynamic balance between human needs and the Earth's ecological carrying capacity through a systemic approach, avoiding development models that meet current demands at the expense of future generations. In 2015, the United Nations established the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals to guide countries worldwide toward achieving key objectives such as good health and well-being, climate action, and to ensure the sustainable well-being of all humanity.
Within this framework, the landscape architecture focuses on three core goals: sustainability, inclusivity, and science-based evidence. It explores how the discipline can move beyond traditional thinking through interdisciplinary dialogue and innovative engineering technologies. The aim is to achieve synergy between ecological resilience and social equity, promote resource recycling and environmental protection, enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of public spaces, and optimize design decisions based on scientific evidence. In doing so, it contributes the knowledge and strength of landscape architecture toward a greener, more livable, and more equitable future.
In this context, 2025 ILAS on the theme Sustainability · Inclusivity · Science-based Evidence: Towards Resilient Futures will be held in Beijing Forestry University (BFU) from 24th – 26th October, 2025. The event is organized by Beijing Forestry University, Landscape Research Group (LRG), and will collaborate with several academic journals, such as Landscape Architecture and Sustainability journal, the Landscape Research journal, the Landscape Architecture journal, and other academic organizations. Experts and scholars from around the world will gather to explore global sustainable development goals and engage in in-depth exchanges.
The keynote speeches at this conference will focus on 3 main topics:
1)Ecological Sustainability and Environmental Resilience
2)Social Inclusivity and Landscape Universality
3)Evidence-based Innovative Pathways in Landscape Design
