ERA special section on the 2024 M 7.3 Hualien Earthquake in Eastern Taiwan, China

Published 10 April, 2024

A major magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the eastern coast of Taiwan, China on April 3, 2024, marking the most powerful earthquake to hit the island since the 1999 magnitude 7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake. To date, the mainshock has claimed more than 10 lives and left more than 1,000 injured. Following the initial quake, a series of aftershocks ensued, with the largest registering at a magnitude of 6.4. Additionally, it triggered a minor local tsunami, several landslides and other associated hazards.

The Journal of Earthquake Research Advances is announcing a special call for papers related to the recent seismic event and the associated hazards. Authors are invited to submit original research articles, review papers, case studies and technical notes that investigate various aspects of the Hualien earthquake, including but not limited to:

  • Analysis of seismological or geodetic recordings of the earthquake sequence
  • Investigations of geological setting and tectonic environment of the sequence
  • Strong ground motions and theireffects on built environment
  • Earthquake early warning, emergency response and recovery efforts
  • Building and infrastructure damage and seismic vulnerability
  • Tsunami, landslides,and other earthquake-triggered geological hazards

Contributions from diverse disciplines within the field of earthquake science are welcome, including seismology, geology, geophysics, earthquake engineering and disaster management.
