Advances in Bio-Interface Design for Enhanced Environmental Sustainability

Introduction:

The proposed special issue in the journal Environmental Surfaces and Interfaces seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in bio-interface design and its applications in enhancing environmental sustainability with an emphasis on surface/interface science. Bio interface design, at the intersection of biology, materials science, and engineering, offers unique opportunities to develop sustainable solutions for pressing environmental challenges. The aim of this special issue is to showcase and disseminate the latest advancements, strategies, and applications that harness bio-inspired and bio-mediated interfaces to promote the protection and restoration of our natural environment. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange, this special issue also aims to highlight the potential of bio-inspired interfaces to address pressing environmental issues, from water and air quality to soil health and beyond. It will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working towards a more sustainable and resilient planet.

• Biofilm-based bioremediation strategies
• Bio-inspired nanomaterials for water purification
• Microbial fuel cells and bioelectrochemical systems for energy-efficient wastewater treatment
• Biologically influenced corrosion mitigation in environmental infrastructure
• Bio-inspired sensors and monitoring techniques for environmental pollution
• Bio-mimetic coatings and surfaces for anti-fouling and self-cleaning applications
• Biologically mediated soil and sediment remediation techniques
• Bio-interface applications in sustainable agriculture and land management
• Case studies and field applications showcasing the effectiveness of bio-inspired interfaces in real-world environmental scenarios.
