Special Issue on [Diagnosis, prevention and treatment of major chronic diseases and drug application research and development]

Published 02 April, 2024

Introduction:

In recent years, the incidence of chronic diseases such as glucolipid metabolic disorders, coronary heart disease, hypertension and asthma has been steadily increasing. Meanwhile, conditions such as hepatitis B, AIDS, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cognitive impairments, mental illnesses, rheumatoid arthritis, gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases, tumors, hematologic diseases, and immune-related diseases have also drawn widespread attention. These major chronic diseases have major impacts on the physiological, psychological and economic burdens of the population.

China places great emphasis on diagnosis, prevention, treatment and drug development to tackle medical conditions. Ongoing efforts are in place to increase scientific research investment and policy support. In recent years, China has formulated the “Healthy China 2030” blueprint, the Medium- and Long-Term Plan for the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Diseases (2017-2025), and the Healthy China Action Plan (2019-2030), aiming to fully promote the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and drug development to address major chronic diseases.

To date, the mechanisms underlying the occurrence and development of many major chronic diseases remain unelucidated. Developing relevant disease models can help to uncover the mechanisms of these diseases and to identify treatment targets. New methods, techniques, and biomarkers for the diagnosis and prevention of major chronic diseases are emerging and gradually being validated and applied clinically. The pharmacology, efficacy, pharmacokinetics and other aspects of drugs for the treatment of major chronic diseases are also being thoroughly researched, providing effective weapons for conquering these diseases.

Notably, the inheritance, innovation and development of traditional Chinese medicine are important components to promote the cause of Healthy China. It is therefore worth further exploring traditional Chinese medicine and tap its potential to prevent and treat major chronic diseases.

At the same time, novel treatment methods such as stem-cell therapy and organoid-based therapy have broad prospects for application and development in the treatment of major chronic diseases. New technologies and methods such as gene editing technology, nanoparticle drug delivery system, and artificial intelligence technology greatly enrich the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and drug development of major chronic diseases. Modern high-precision instruments also play an indispensable role in the diagnosis and treatment of major chronic diseases.

The organization of this special issued stemmed from our aim to gather the achievements in the diagnosis, treatment and drug development to address major chronic diseases in China, strengthen the comprehensive concept of using new drugs and technologies to prevent and treat major chronic diseases, and promote research on the diagnosis, treatment and drug development. We sincerely invite you to submit research papers and reviews related to these topics. As a token of gratitude for the support of the authors, a remuneration of 1,000 to 5,000 yuan per article (RMB) will be provided after the formal publication of the accepted manuscripts.
