Energy Nexus: Waste to Energy, Food and Product

Published 18 May, 2023

Introduction:

The consumption of fossil fuels and their derivatives has created an environmental crisis, mainly due to greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, which has led to climate change and many environmental problems. With governments worldwide implementing climate policies to restrict or tax greenhouse gas emissions, the imperative to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, including agricultural and food waste, becomes increasingly crucial.

Water, food, and energy form a nexus at the heart of sustainable development. Agriculture stands as the largest consumer of global freshwater resources, while water plays a crucial role in the production of various forms of energy. The demands for all three essentials—water, food, and energy—are escalating rapidly. In order to effectively address present and future challenges, researchers and scientists need to prioritize integrated and sustainable management of water, food, and energy, while striking a balance between the requirements of humanity, nature, and the economy.

This interdisciplinary special issue aims to explore the convergence of waste-to-energy (W2E) conversion processes and foster the advancement, innovation, and dissemination of knowledge in sustainable strategies for W2E. It provides a platform for scholars and researchers to exchange innovative insights in related fields. We invite submissions to showcase the latest advancements in sustainable W2E technologies, emerging technologies for resource recovery, and low-carbon biotechnologies and bioenergy systems.
