Special Issue on Green Biomanufacturing

Published 22 November, 2023

Introduction:

The use of fossil fuels during the Industrial Revolution has been a driving force behind the development of the human economy and society. However, this progress has given rise to numerous ecological and environmental challenges. In recent years, there have been growing concerns and pressures worldwide to transition from traditional manufacturing methods to green manufacturing technologies and related industries to address the issues effectively.

Green biomanufacturing has been proposed as a viable solution for the transformation and modernization of the traditional chemical industry. Green biomanufacturing refers to the use of industrial biotechnology for the advanced manufacturing of biofuels, bio-based materials, and bioproducts. It involves the concepts of cleaner production to produce products in a more efficient, sustainable, and eco-friendly process, enabling a circular carbon economy.

In recent decades there has been a sharp rise of new green biomanufacturing technologies, including innovation of industrial enzymes, development of industrial strains, bioconversion of renewable feedstocks, and intelligent biomanufacturing equipment and processes, among others. These innovations have been applied in a wide variety of fields, including energy plants, microalgae, bioenergy, bio-based materials, fine chemicals, healthcare, food, and textiles.

This special issue aims to capture the latest advances and discuss current challenges in green biomanufacturing. The topics of interest of this special issue include but are not limited to the following research areas:

  • Plant Biomass
  • Biocatalysis and Biorefinary
  • Microbial Cell Factories
  • Biofuels and Biochemicals
  • Bio-based Materials
  • Synthetic Biology
  • Advanced Fermentation and Bioseparation
  • Intelligent Biomanufacturing (equipment and process)
  • LCA Analysis
