Journal of Digital Economy (JDE) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal. It is the official English-language journal of the Institute of Economics at Tsinghua University, and one of the journals affiliated with the China Information Economics Society. While the Industrial Revolution transformed humanity from early agrarian societies to an industrialized age, the 21st century is witnessing the rise of a digital civilization. JDE sheds light on how this digital era is expanding, restructuring and challenging existing knowledge and traditional methodology. It is a platform for both theoretical and empirical contributions to multiple disciplines, including, but not limited to, Economics, Management, Sociology, Political Economy, Computer Science and Environmental Science. JDE examines ways to improve economic well-being, social equity and environmental sustainability in the digital era. It welcomes practice and policy-oriented studies that tackle the challenges and harness the opportunities distinctive to our time.

1. The Institute of Economics was established in December 1993. Its predecessor was the Division of Political Economy, Department of Social Sciences at Tsinghua University.
Since its establishment, the faculty of the institute received research grants from various government agencies including the National Social Sciences Vital Projects Fund, the National Natural Science Fund, National Social Science Fund, Humanities and Social Sciences planning projects from the Ministry of Education, as well as other agencies at the provincial or ministerial level. The faculty as a whole has published 20 research monographs, 15 textbooks, and more than 300 journal articles. In addition, the institute has edited several series of publications, namely "Explorations of Tsinghua New Political Economics," “Renditions of Socioeconomic History,” “Tsinghua Series of Economic History,” and “Global Chinese Migrations.” The faculty are also proud recipients of more than 10 teaching awards from various agencies such as the Ministry of Education.
The institute has established several platforms for the dissemination of research and knowledge. These include "Tsinghua Lecture on Theoretical Economists," "Tsinghua Forum for Economic History,” and “Tsinghua Lecture by Chinese Entrepreneurial Leaders.” The Tsinghua lecture venue invites world-class scholars and entrepreneurs to showcase their successes and communicate with Tsinghua faculty members and students about China’s future. Faculty members and graduate students of the institute freely participated in the “Biweekly Seminar on Theoretical Economics” and “The Student Salon for Theoretical Economics” acquiring cutting-edge knowledge in economic research and current economic issues. The institute faculty made several initiatives by integrating internal and external resources, as well as domestic and overseas resources. They founded the Research Center for Political Economy, the Research Center for Chinese Economic History, the Research Center for Strategy and Policy, the Research Center for Development of Chinese Enterprises, and the Research Center for Information Industry.

2. China Information Economics Society (CIES) was established in March 1989 and is a national-level academic research organization registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China. Its vision is to develop into the most influential academic society in China in the fields of information economics and information management, with an international reputation.
Through various forms of academic exchange both in China and internationally, as well as exchanges between academia and industry, the Society provides its members and member organizations with an information platform for cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration. Its social mission is to promote the development and dissemination of knowledge in information economics and information management among China's academic and business communities in the context of the digital economy.
As of December 2025, the Society has more than 1,200 individual and institutional members. Its members are mainly affiliated with more than 210 universities, research institutions, government agencies, public institutions, and social organizations across 28 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in mainland China. Its overseas individual members include scholars from institutions such as Baylor University in the United States, City University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, and The University of Queensland in Australia.
The Society's individual members are primarily university faculty members and PhD students, whose research focuses mainly on information economics, digital economics, management information system, information resource management, human‑AI collaboration.
