Editorial Board Meeting World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

After a whole year of preparation, the first Editorial Board Meeting of World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery was successfully held in Tianjin Hyatt Regency Hotel on May 24th 2015. There were 48 board members attending the meeting, including the Chief Editor Prof. Daqing Li from the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Associate Editor Prof. Lawrence Lustig from the Medical Center of Colombia University, and Board Member Assistant Professor Waleed Abuzeid from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Ling Luo, the Deputy Secretary General of Chinese Medical Association attended the meeting and delivered a speech.  

The World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery obtained authoritative approval from the PRC State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, and acquired the National United Number of Periodical CN10-1248/R in April 2014. It is the only successful application from the Chinese Medical Association in 2013 as a specialized English-language periodical.

The first Editorial Board consist of 95 members in total (50 from mainland China, 3 from Hong Kong and Taiwan, 42 Internationally members). In addition to one Chief Editor and four Associate Editors , there are also three advisors and two honorary Chief Editors . Furthermore, the board encompasses 26 corresponding editors. 

Prof. Daqing Li, Editor-in-Chief of the journal introduced the aims and scopes at the meeting. The World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery(WJO) is an international peer-reviewed journal which encompasses advances in clinical practice, as well as contributions in basic and translational research pertaining to the field of otorhinolaryngology – head and neck surgery.  Submissions related to all aspects of the field are highly encouraged including those in head and neck surgery and oncology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, laryngology, neurolaryngology, rhinology, skull base surgery, otology, neurotology, sleep medicine and surgery, as well as pediatric and general otolaryngology.  Original papers exploring related fields such as allergy and immunology, maxillofacial rehabilitation, audiology, auditory and vestibular neuroscience, vestibular therapy, speech and swallowing disorders, and craniofacial pathology are encouraged.  The Journal incorporates a “Priority Publication” section, intended to fast track submissions that highlight advances in the subspecialties outlined above. Selected submissions will be available online within four weeks and printed shortly thereafter. The Journal also includes an “Expert Opinion” section. Experts affiliated with the Journal will review and comment on complicated or rare cases submitted by readers. 

WJO is intended to be a key resource for clinicians, allied health specialists, and researchers in the fields of otorhinolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery and oncology. To this end, the editorial board consists of renowned specialists from around the world with a broad range of expertise.  The Journal is published four times a year by KeAi and includes original clinical manuscripts (retrospective case series, prospective studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses), and novel basic science and translational research studies.  All submissions undergo rigorous peer review and, if published, benefit from distribution to an international readership.  

Prof. Li also summarized the status of international editorial board members. The current editorial board consists of a strong international editorial team, including representative academic leaders in all subjects of otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery. They are very supportive to the journal and provided many ideas and suggestions to the Chief Editor and Editorial Office.

In order for the journal to go global quickly, and enable foreign peers to know about it as soon as possible, the journal adopted the EVISE editorial system (provided by Elsevier) from the first issue. All submissions will undergo rigorous peer review, and accepted papers will be published in open access form in Science Direct, which can be accessed and downloaded freely by global readers. The journal will also publish its print edition at the same time.

The editorial board members all engaged actively in the discussion and contributed many ideas and proposals for journal development. They all agreed that the most important factor for sound development of the journal is to ensure high quality contributions, and they proposed many methods for encouraging author submissions, which will be implemented in the future activities of the editorial office. We hereby invite all reviewers, authors and readers to submit papers to World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and showcase to the world important research achievements on otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery in China.
