Research in Cold and Arid Regions is a peer-reviewed and interdisciplinary research journal, which focuses on the latest research on processes and patterns of the Earth's surface system in cold and arid regions.

Research in cold regions — topics covered

  1. There is a particular emphasis on cold-region-characterised physical, chemical and biological processes and their interactions. In addition, we welcome submissions that consider the response of the cryosphere to global change and human activities, and the impact of these two elements on environmental and acclimatisable strategies.

  2. Glaciers, snow, rivers, lakes, sea ice, permafrost, seasonal frozen ground and periglacial geomorphology, etc.

  3. Cold region engineering and technology.

Research in arid regions — topics covered

The goal is to provide reliable technological support for water, ecology and food security in arid regions.

  2. Deserts, oases, loess and aeolian landforms, etc.

  3. Comprehensive studies on mountain-desert-oasis systems in arid watersheds that are dominated by water resources.

The Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources (NIEER), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in 2016 through the merger of five former CAS institutes, namely Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Lanzhou Center for Oil and Gas Resources affiliated to the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Lanzhou Branch of the National Science Library.

The NIEER is a multidisciplinary research institute, specializing in study of eco-environment, natural resources, and national key environmental engineering; focusing on, among other things, cryosphere and global climate change, frozen ground and cold regions engineering, desert and desertification, plateau atmospheric physics and meteorology, water and land resources and environmental rehabilitation, ecology and agriculture, remote sensing information system, oil and gas geology, and scientific information service.
